Most people start looking for a new softener for one of two reasons: the old one stopped doing its job, or they moved into a home with hard water and no system at all. Either way, the first step is the same. Find out what your water has in it and what the equipment you have now is doing.
Start with what you already have
If there is a softener in the garage, a Nuvia tech looks at it before anyone talks about a new one.
- Inspects your old unit. Whether it regenerates, how it is set, and what state the tanks and the valve are in. Our techs know other brands and usually find what is wrong quickly.
- Runs a free water analysis at your tap. Hardness, chlorine and total dissolved solids. If hardness is getting through, the numbers show it.
Then you hear what is wrong and what your options are. Sometimes the old unit can be fixed. Nuvia does not repair other brands, so you take what the tech found to its maker or installer. Sometimes it is worn out, too small for the house, or was never matched to your water.
Signs it is time to replace
- It keeps failing. The same problem comes back after it was fixed.
- It was never sized for your home. More people, more bathrooms, or more water use than it was set up for. Soft water runs out before the day does.
- It only does one job. A softener removes hardness. It does nothing about chlorine, chloramine or sediment. If your water analysis shows those too, a softener alone will not cover it.
- Hardness gets through even when it runs. The inspection shows whether that is a setting, a part, or the unit itself.
Installing a system for the first time
No system yet? The water analysis comes first. A softener is the answer to hardness, not to everything. Some homes need softening, some need filtration, and many need both. The numbers from your tap decide which, and a specialist walks you through the options that match what we find.
A whole-home system goes where your main water line comes into the house, usually in the garage or on an outside wall. It needs a bypass so you can shut it off without shutting off the house, a drain line, and settings matched to your hardness and the size of your household. Experienced, Nuvia-qualified technicians do the install, and removal and disposal of your old softener is included at no additional charge.
If your old unit is rented
A rented softener still belongs to the rental company. Call them first to ask how to cancel and what your agreement says about fees. If you ask us to, and you sign off, Nuvia will disconnect the rental unit during your install. The unit goes back to them. Book the free inspection anytime. Renting vs owning a water softener covers what to check before you decide.

Questions people ask
Do I need to replace my water softener, or can it be fixed?
It depends on what failed. A stuck valve or a setting problem is a different job from worn-out resin or a unit that was never sized for your home. The free inspection tells you which one you have before you spend anything.
What does the free inspection cost?
Nothing. The inspection of your old equipment and the water analysis at your tap are both free.
Will Nuvia fix my old softener if it is another brand?
No. Nuvia does not service or repair other brands. Our techs know how to look at them, and they usually find what is wrong quickly. If the unit can be fixed, you can take what they found to its maker or installer.
Does Nuvia take away my old softener?
Yes. When you install a new Nuvia system, removal and disposal of your old softener is included at no additional charge.
My old softener is rented. Can Nuvia take it out?
Yes, if you ask us to and you sign off on it. A rented unit still belongs to the rental company, so call them to cancel and ask what your agreement says about fees and how they collect the unit. We can disconnect it for you, and the free inspection is available either way.
How much does a new water softener cost?
Nuvia does not print per-system prices. The right system depends on your hardness, what else is in your water, the size of your home and how many people live there. A specialist goes through the options with you once your water analysis is done.
I have never had a softener. Where do I start?
With a free water analysis at your tap. It shows your hardness, chlorine and total dissolved solids. A softener only removes hardness, so the numbers tell you whether you need one, something else, or both.
I already own a Nuvia system. Who do I call?
