A softener that has stopped working often looks fine from the outside. The lights are on, the tank sits where it always has, and the hard water comes back slowly enough that you notice the shower door before you notice the softener.
Signs your softener stopped softening
- The spots are back. White film on glasses out of the dishwasher, crust around faucets and shower heads, a ring in the kettle.
- The salt never goes down. The level in the brine tank stays the same week after week. A working softener uses salt every time it regenerates.
- It runs all the time. You hear it cycling far more often than it used to, or at hours it never ran before.
- The water feels or tastes different. Soap stops lathering the way it did, or the water tastes salty.
- The pressure dropped. Showers and taps run weaker than they did, across the house.
Any one of these is worth a look. Two or more usually means hardness is getting past the unit.
What the free inspection covers
A Nuvia tech comes to your home and does two things.
- Looks at your unit. How it is set, whether it regenerates, and what state the tanks and the valve are in. Our techs know other brands and usually find what is wrong quickly.
- Runs a free water analysis at your tap. Hardness, chlorine and total dissolved solids. If hardness is coming through, the numbers show it.
Then you hear what is wrong and what your options are. You decide what happens next.
Repair it or replace it
Nuvia does not repair other brands. If your unit can be fixed, the tech tells you what failed, and you can take that to the maker or the company that installed it. If it is worn out, undersized for your home, or never matched to your water in the first place, the water analysis is where a new system starts. Nuvia does not print per-system prices; a specialist goes through the options with you once your numbers are in. Replacing or installing a softener explains how that works.
Renting a softener you want gone
A rented softener still belongs to the rental company. Call them first to ask how to cancel and what your agreement says about fees. If you ask us to, and you sign off, Nuvia will disconnect the rental unit during your install. The unit goes back to them. Book the free inspection anytime. Renting vs owning a water softener covers what to check first.

Questions people ask
How do I know if my water softener stopped working?
The signs are the ones you bought it to stop. Spots and white crust come back on glass and fixtures, the salt in the brine tank stays at the same level for weeks, the unit runs far more often than it used to, or soap stops lathering the way it did. The free water analysis at your tap shows whether hardness is getting through.
Does Nuvia repair other brands of water softeners?
No. Nuvia does not service or repair other brands. Our techs know how to look at them, though. You get a free inspection, with a free water analysis, to see whether the unit is working and what is wrong with it. They usually find the problem quickly.
What does the free inspection cost?
Nothing. The inspection of your old equipment and the water analysis are both free.
Should I repair my old softener or replace it?
It depends on what failed, how old the unit is, and whether it was ever sized for your home and your water. The inspection tells you what is wrong first. Then you decide, with the facts in front of you, whether to have it repaired by its maker or installer or look at a new system.
If I replace it, does Nuvia take the old softener away?
Yes. With a new Nuvia system, removal and disposal of your old softener is included at no additional charge.
I rent my water softener. Can Nuvia take it out?
Yes, if you ask us to and you sign off on it. A rented unit still belongs to the rental company, so call them to cancel and ask what your agreement says about fees and how they collect the unit. We can disconnect it for you, and the free inspection is available either way.
I already own a Nuvia system and it is not working. Who do I call?
Go to Customer Support. That is where Nuvia owners get service, warranty help and replacement filters.
Can I still have a salt-based softener in my city?
It depends on your city and the agency that treats your sewage. Some Southern California cities restrict salt-based units. The California softener rules page lists them, and a specialist confirms your address before you choose anything.
