Renting vs owning a water softener

Renting means a monthly fee and the provider owns the unit. Owning means you pay for the system and it is yours. To compare, add up what you would pay over the years you plan to stay. Start with a free inspection of your current unit and a free water analysis from Nuvia.

A rented softener is easy to forget about. The fee comes out every month, the unit sits in the garage, and nobody checks whether it still fits the house or the water. Whether you keep renting or decide to own, the first step is the same: find out what your water has in it and what the unit you have is doing.

How each one works

Renting. You pay a monthly fee. The provider owns the unit, and your agreement sets what the fee covers, how long the term runs, and how the unit comes out when you stop.

Owning. You pay for the system and it is yours. There is no monthly rental fee. You keep salt in it, and the upkeep is yours to arrange.

Neither one is right for everyone. The answer comes down to your agreement, your water and how long you plan to stay.

Do the arithmetic with your own agreement

  1. Find your monthly fee on a recent bill or statement.
  2. Multiply it by the months you expect to stay in the home. Five years is 60 payments.
  3. Add anything else your agreement charges: setup, salt delivery, service visits, a cancellation fee or a removal fee.
  4. Compare the total with owning a system sized for your home and your water.

What to check in a rental agreement

  • What the fee covers. Salt, service visits, repairs, or only the equipment.
  • The term. Is there a minimum, and what does it cost to end early?
  • Price changes. Can the monthly fee go up, and how much notice do you get?
  • Removal. How the provider wants the unit returned, and who takes it out.
  • Selling the home. Whether the rental ends at the sale or passes to the buyer.

Is the unit you have doing its job?

A rented or owned softener can stop softening without looking any different. Spots back on glass, salt that never goes down, or a unit that runs all night are the signs. Is your water softener broken? covers them.

A Nuvia tech can check it for you.

  1. Inspects your current unit. Whether it regenerates, how it is set, and what state it is in. Nuvia does not repair other brands, but our techs know them and usually find what is wrong quickly.
  2. Runs a free water analysis at your tap. Hardness, chlorine and total dissolved solids. Those numbers show what your water needs, whatever you decide about the unit.

If you decide to stop renting

Contact your rental provider first. The unit is theirs, so ask what your agreement says about ending it and any fees. If you choose a system of your own and ask us to, Nuvia will disconnect the rental during the install with your sign-off, and the unit goes back to the provider. If you want a system of your own, replacing or installing a softener explains how the water analysis leads to the options.

Questions people ask

Is it cheaper to rent or buy a water softener?

It depends on your monthly fee, what it covers, and how long you stay in the home. Multiply the monthly fee by the number of months you expect to stay, add any setup or removal charges in your agreement, and compare that with the cost of owning a system sized for your water.

Can I cancel my water softener rental?

Check your agreement. Rental terms set out how to cancel, whether there is a minimum term or a fee, and how the provider wants the equipment returned. Contact your rental provider first, before anyone touches the unit.

Can Nuvia remove my rented water softener?

Yes, if you ask us to and you sign off on it. A rented unit still belongs to the rental company, so call them to cancel and ask what your agreement says about fees and how they collect the unit. We can disconnect it for you, and the free inspection is available either way.

Does Nuvia service rented or other-brand softeners?

No. Nuvia does not service or repair other brands. Our techs give you a free inspection of the unit with a free water analysis, to see whether it is working and what is wrong. They usually find the problem quickly.

What do I have to do if I own a softener?

Keep salt in the brine tank, and have the system looked at if the signs of hard water come back. When you own it, the upkeep is yours to arrange, and so is the equipment.

What happens to a rented softener if I sell my house?

Your agreement says. Some rentals end at the sale, some can transfer to the buyer. Ask your provider before you list the home so the unit does not hold up the sale.

What does the free inspection cost?

Nothing. The inspection of your current equipment and the water analysis at your tap are both free.
