What the makers say

Every time a water heater heats the water, calcium and magnesium come out of it and settle in the bottom of the tank. Orange County water is hard. Here is what the makers say about that.

  • Rheem, a water heater maker, says that if you have hard water, you should flush your water heater every 6 months. For most homes it says once a year. Rheem's article
  • A.O. Smith, another maker, put out a technical bulletin for the plumbing trade on removing scale from tank heaters. It says: "Heater failure due to excessive lime buildup voids most warranties." It is an undated legacy bulletin, not a current warranty, so read your own warranty. The bulletin

Many water heater warranties exclude damage from sediment or lime buildup. Yours may be one of them. Check the exclusions list in your paperwork.

What a new one costs

A new 50-gallon gas water heater in Orange County runs $2,200 to $3,200 installed, according to S&E Plumbing in Orange, CA (April 2026). That covers the unit, labor, permits, code upgrades and disposal. Their cost page

How hard is your water?

Water over 180 milligrams per liter of hardness is "very hard" by the U.S. Geological Survey's scale. Every Orange County figure on our hard water by city page is over that line. Those are district averages. The water at your tap can read higher or lower.
